Jaichy to Kyzyl-Tuu, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday, October 14, 2014.
The local CBT office (for Community Based Tourism) leads me to Baha, my horseback riding guide for the next new days. He speaks Kyrgyz and a little Russian but no English.
Shepherd in the valley.
Baha leads us off the asphalt road and towards the mountains.
Some curious kids wonder what we’re doing on their property so Baha asks their mother for permission to pass through to get to the mountains. Permission granted.
Baha leads the way.
Follow the leader.
Baha and I stop for a quick lunch of bread, salami, candy bars, and juice before the terrain gets more difficult. I manage to have small talk using the Kyrgyz chapter of my #LonelyPlanet Central Asia phrasebook. We start to bond over the word “jaqshë,” meaning good, fine, or cool.
“Okay?” Baha asks me in one of the few English words he knows.
“Jaqshë,” I reply with thumb up.
