FIRST OFF, an update for all you faithful Blogreaders who still look me up from time to time (plus all you new fans who discovered me this year). It’s been one hell of a productive summer. Without landing a full-time 9-to-5 job, I’ve managed to work my way out of post-trip debt via freelance design projects, and am finally on my financial way to the next phase of my life — whatever that is. But the summer hasn’t been all about workin’ for The Man; I’ve also managed to get published in the September 2005 edition of Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel magazine and the September 4th edition of the Chicago Tribune‘s travel section. Pitches for further publications are in the works.
But perhaps the most significant event of the summer (or at least the most relevant to this entry) is when I received an email from one Stephanie James, a Blogreader and fan who just so happened to be a member of the Program Board at East Carolina University, Home of the ECU Pirates. On behalf of the Student Union, Stephanie invited me to fly down to ECU’s Greenville, NC campus as a guest lecturer to talk to 1985ers about ‘round-the-world travel and to share my personal insights and experiences about life on the road.
After months of back-and-forth e-mails and phone calls, I’ve finally signed the contract and am happy to announce that I’m slated to appear for an exclusive engagement on the evening of September 16th. This is both good news and bad news for me: the good news is that I’ll be put up in a nice hotel near campus, and that I get to hang out and party with college kids (again), but the bad news is that I might actually have to write something and speak before a crowd of people for an hour.
It may be of note that this will be the first time I’ll be speaking in such a circumstance, so not even I know what to expect — the lecture is either going to be really great, or like watching a train wreck. Either way, come on down because I’ll be giving away free stuff.

I attend ECU and found out about this and your lecture from a buddy of mine. I think it is great! I will be in attendance to hear of your experiences.
I also checked out your portfolio site, and I am quite impressed. You are a talented person and success has obviously already found you! CONGRATULATIONS! Now if only there were a way to coax success into looking my direction

The lecture went okay, for a first-run. Funny, I was worried about whether or not I could fill 40 minutes, but ended up babbling for an hour and a half. There wasn’t even time for a formal Q&A, but fans came to meet me on stage after the fact.
A video of the event will be put together soon and posted on-line—so that perhaps I can land more speaking gigs at a university near YOU!

JYOUKNIT: Well, ECU is a party school, so I didn’t expect much of a turnout for a 7pm talk on a Friday night that wasn’t as advertised as much as it could since school was closed for two days that week in all the Hurricane Ophelia hype. But about 25 showed, and laughed at my jokes. Surprisingly, a large projected photo of my own poo wasn’t so well-received, but they loved the photo of the beer with a Happy Meal in Paris.

THE GLOBAL TRIP GLOSSARY
Confused at some of the jargon that's developed with this blog and its readers over the years? Here's what they mean:
BFFN: acronym for "Best Friend For Now"; a friend made on the road, who will share travel experiences for the time being, only to part ways and lose touch withThe Big Trip: the original sixteen month around-the-world trip that started it all, spanning 37 countries in 5 continents over 503 days (October 2003–March 2005)
NIZ: acronym for "No Internet Zone"; a place where there is little to no Internet access, thus preventing dispatches from being posted.
SBR: acronym for "Silent Blog Reader"; a person who has regularly followed The Global Trip blog for years without ever commenting or making his/her presence known to the rest of the reading community. (Breaking this silence by commenting is encouraged.)
Stupid o'clock: any time of the early morning that you have to wake up to catch a train, bus, plane, or tour. Usually any time before 6 a.m. is automatically “stupid o’clock.”
The Trinidad Show: a nickname of The Global Trip blog, used particularly by travelers that have been written about, who are self-aware that they have become "characters" in a long-running story — like characters in the Jim Carrey movie, The Truman Show.
WHMMR: acronym for "Western Hemisphere Monday Morning Rush"; an unofficial deadline to get new content up by a Monday morning, in time for readers in the western hemisphere (i.e. the majority North American audience) heading back to their computers.
1981ers: people born after 1981. Originally, this was to designate groups of young backpackers fresh out of school, many of which were loud, boorish and/or annoying. However, time has passed and 1981ers have matured and have been quite pleasant to travel with. The term still refers to young annoying backpackers, regardless of year — I guess you could call them "1991ers" in 2013 — young, entitled millennials on the road these days, essentially.
